Tuesday March 2nd, the public was invited to  celebrate the opening of the first “Making it Montreal” art exhibit at Casa del Popolo, featuring new works by some of Montreal’s best emerging artists: Kiarra Albina, Tyler Rauman, Aimee Van Drimmelen,  Jesse Purcell and Harley Smart.

Billy Mavreas hosted an interesting discussion about issues artists experience in Montreal. One person said that one finds in Montreal issues similar to what one would find in any city, with a group of creative people joining together to form a small subculture within the larger city culture. Although Quebec is quite generous with cultural grants, due to the large number of applicants, grant money is not something an artist could depend on for survival. Due to the large number of artists trying to gain exposure, some work for free. This could be a problem, in that it would give people the idea that artists are willing to work for free; so why pay? A panel member pointed out that it would be a good idea for each artist to request some payment to avoid a situation in which nobody would want to pay, since it’s all free.

Montreal offers a rich, cultural milieu, with plenty of opportunities for creative people to get together and socialize, exchange ideas or to participate in events.
